Suction-Assisted Lipectomy / Ultrasound-Assisted Lipectomy

Many women experience the frustration of being unable to get rid of fatty deposits around the thighs, hips, and abdomen, no matter how much they diet or exercise. Often caused by an inherited genetic tendency or due to pregnancy-related weight-gain, these problem areas that do not respond to traditional methods of weight loss are usually effectively treated by liposuction. Scars from the procedure are minimal. Ideal candidates have localized deposits of fat which do not respond to diet and exercise, have good skin elasticity, and are at or near their normal weight. It is important to remember that diet and exercise are crucial to maintaining the desired look, and that this procedure is not a substitute for weight reduction.

Procedure
With traditional or suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL), one end of a tube is inserted into the area of unwanted fat which has been infiltrated with large volumes of saline to lessen bleeding and bruising. The other end is attached to a machine that creates a strong vacuum. The fatty tissue is removed by manipulating the tube within the fat layers.

Ultrasound-assisted lipectomy (UAL) involves the application of ultrasonic energy to adipose (fat) tissue which effectively "liquefies" the fat, which, in turn, can be removed using a low vacuum suction. UAL is a gentler technique which allows a larger volume of fat to be removed. The patient may experience less bruising, blood loss, and swelling, resulting in a faster recovery time than with traditional liposuction.
Recovery
  • After the procedure, tight girdles or wrappings are worn for four to six weeks to minimize swelling and aid the recovery process.

  • You may return to work in three to four days, but swelling and bruising may persist for several weeks.

  • Avoid strenuous activity during the first 30 days because it may cause increased swelling and delay the recovery process.

liposuction procedures are simple operations, liposuction remains a
