To reshape sagging breasts or reduce the size of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), the Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is an option. It is best to postpone the procedure until childbearing is complete, since pregnancy is likely to stretch breasts again and offset the results.
Procedure
An anchor-shaped incision is made following the natural contour of the breast. This outlines the area where breast skin will be removed and defines the new, higher nipple location. The skin around the areola is brought down to shape the breast, and the incision is closed with stitches. An implant can be inserted at the time of the breast lift to increase the fullness and contour of the breast.
Recovery
After surgery, an elastic bandage or support bra over gauze dressings is worn. Stitches are removed five to ten days after surgery.
Breasts may be bruised, swollen and uncomfortable for a day or two.
Following surgery, a good support bra should be worn and strenuous activity avoided.
Scars are permanent but, over time, usually fade to thin white lines.
