Breasts are symbolic of femininity and fertility. When a woman is not satisfied with her breasts, she may feel unattractive. At the Women's Center for Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, several breast-shaping procedures are offered to patients who seek improvement-not perfection-in their appearance.

As the years go by, almost every woman notices a gradual change in the size, shape and feel of her breasts. Gravity, pregnancy, breast-feeding, weight gain and loss all take their toll on a woman’s body. Even if the volume of the breast stays the same, the firmness and elasticity are often lost. Surgery of the breast can improve these problems and contribute to a more youthful contour. Underdeveloped, small breast can be enlarged, a lot or a little. Oversized, burdensome breasts can be reduced to a smaller, more proportional and comfortable size. Sagging, shrinking breasts can be lifted and reshaped. At the Women's Center for Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, several breast-shaping procedures are offered to patients who seek improvement, not perfection, in their appearance.

Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammoplasty) enhances the size and shape of a women's breast. It may also be used to reconstruct the breasts following lumpectomy.

Breast Lift

To reshape sagging breasts or reduce the size of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), the Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is an option. When breasts require only minimal lifting, a periareolar or "scar less" lift can be performed. It is best to postpone the procedure until childbearing is complete, since pregnancy is likely to stretch breasts again and offset the results.

Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) helps to correct breasts that are overly large and sagging, a condition that can cause back pain and severe discomfort in other areas. An improved appearance is an added benefit of the operation.

Bras and Breast Surgery

A supportive bra is usually worn after surgery. In most cases, it helps minimize discomfort associated with surgery.
* To avoid buying the wrong size, postpone shopping for regular bras until the swelling has gone down (about six to eight weeks after surgery) and the breasts have "settled" to their normal position.
* Avoid wearing an under-wire bra for at least six to eight weeks after surgery. After you have healed, however, this type of bra provides good support.
* When exercising, be sure to wear a well-fitting sports bra to help maintain optimal surgical results.

Breast Implants:
Your Options

Breast Augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of a woman's breast. Women may choose this procedure for several reasons: to enhance their body contour; to correct a reduction in breast size after pregnancy; to balance a difference in breast size; or as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery...
