Large or prominent ears can be reshaped and brought closer to the head with Ear Surgery (Otoplasty).

Procedure
An incision is made behind the ear to expose cartilage, which is folded in on itself, or removed, to reshape the ear. The incision is closed with sutures.

Recovery

Facial surgery may improve a person's self-image by correcting minor imperfections or by rejuvenating a tired appearance resulting from long-term sun exposure or the aging process. To feel your best, you should follow a regimen of proper nutrition, skin care and exercise after the procedure. We encourage patients to adhere to the following guidelines in order to feel good inside and out.

  • Ears are covered with a compression dressing which is removed within a few days. It may be necessary for some patients to wear a light head dressing or headband for several more weeks.

  • When dressings are removed, hair may be washed with a mild baby shampoo and blown dry, as long as the cool setting is used.

  • You are usually up within a day or two and able to resume normal activities within a week.

  • Strenuous exercise should be avoided for four weeks after surgery.

Ear Surgery:
What to expect

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is the only cosmetic procedure that is performed more frequently on children than it is on adults. Because ears are almost fully developed by the age of four, many parents opt to have their child's ears surgically reduced during pre-pubescent or early teen years. Of course ear surgery is also performed on thousands of adult patients a year. However, the cartilage in the ear becomes less pliable with age, which could limit the enhancement capabilities available to the operating surgeon.
